Heparin Therapy Case Studies

CAUTION: The images in this section are rather graphic. While every attempt has been made to have the final result images of the healed burn patients in the same visual field as the images of the presenhting or early stages of treatment, this was not always possible. Please use discretion when viewing these images.

The burn victims in our photographic evidence share several features in common.

After heparin was introduced, patients:

  • Required no pain medication or blood transfusions and less resuscitation fluids than calculated.
  • Experienced little or no shock.
  • Received no surgeries–including incisions, debridements, and grafts.
  • Healed with no scars or contractures that restricted function.

In the case studies, variation in the appearance of the healed smooth skin is the result of variable repigmentation that occurs with deep burns.

Case 1. Male, early 30’s. Propane gas tank explosion with deep 2nd and 3rd degrees burns of 83% body size. Patient discharged from hospital on postburn Day 27.

Case 2. Male, Age 32. Subject received 2nd and 3rd degree burns from a propane tank explosion, covering 40% of body size. Patient discharged from the hospital on postburn Day 15.

Case 3. Female toddler. A pot of boiling water overturned onto her head, neck and shoulders. Treatment with topical heparin in the doctor’s office and at home by her parents resulted in healing by Day 11.

Case 4. Male. Subject received deep 2nd and 3rd degree burns in a gasoline explosion. Only the right forearm and hand are shown.

Case 5. Female, age 6. Fire ignited child’s clothing as she stood with her back to an open fireplace. She received burns on her back, chest and arm. Heparin administration led to final healing by Day 16.

Case 6. Male in his 40’s. Patient was involved in a propane tank explosion and suffered deep 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his head, neck, upper forearms, and hands.

Case 7. Adult male. Injured in propane gas explosion; 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Treated topically and parentally. Day 1 and day 30.
