Dr. Thappa & Dr. Lohani, Head of the Burn Unit Katmandu, Nepal:
" We 3 Plastic Surgeons in our Hospital Burn Unit in Katmandu, Nepal who add heparin to our burn treatment have been very happy about our new found knowledge about the beneficial effects of heparin in our burn patients . We started the use of heparin in May 2005. We usually treat about 200 patients per year. The ongoing armed conflict in Nepal may reduce the number of our patients due to the difficulty in the mobility of the patients. One of our objectives is to show other hospitals in Nepal that HEPARIN WORKS with facts and figures. There is a Childrens Hospital adjacent to our Hospital, so our paediatric patients are only 10%, and our patients who are adults are 90%. We use heparin both topically and parenterally. Our experience with heparin has been reduced pain, lesser procedures, faster discharge, happier patients, and reduced costs. ?We will participate in all phases of heparin implementation, teaching, research studies, travel and presentation within and outside of Nepal, and responding to thermal disasters using heparin as an initial treatment to relieve pain and initiate therapy in the many burned persons."
