SBI held an International Heparin Therapy in Burns Symposium in Asuncion Paraguay, May 23 -26, 2008. Presentations were made of studies by Dr Saliba from the USA; Dr. Reyes from Mexico; Dr MA Bonilla from El Salvador; Dra Maria da Graca Costa from Porto Alegre, Brazil; Drs Flavio Stillitano and Prof. Hamilton Gonella from Sao Paolo, Brazil; and Dra. Prof. Maria Cristina Serra from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  Dr. Bruno Balmelli Forno was instrumental in the planning and execution of the symposium, with able assistance by his Asuncion colleagues, Plastic Surgeons Miguel Angel Insurraldo and Oswaldo Aquino, and Dermatologist Dra. M. Maciel. Impressed by the presentations, the Paraguay doctors started a study of the acute analgesic effects of heparin in burned patients on the last day of the Symposium. The abstract is below.  Future meetings in other South American countries of Uruguay and Ecuador were discussed. Ecuador was selected first because an Ecuadorian Burn Society Meeting in 2008 was already scheduled for early October 2008 (see Ecuador in Heparin Worldwide).  Speakers were selected for the Symposium planned for Uruguay for 2010.
