The First Russian American Burn Meeting was held in St Petersburg and then continued in Moscow June 20 to 27, 1997. Dr. Oxanna Dmitrienko, MD, Regional Head of Thermal Injuries, was the Russian Secretariat Organizer. It was a successful dynamic meeting. Drs. Mangus and Saliba presented their heparin studies. Dr. Saliba returned to both cities in August 1997. Working In St Petersburg as a guest of Dr. Dmitrienko, Drs. Saliba and Dmitrienko successfully implemented heparin therapy into burn treatment. Dr. Dmitrienko and her colleagues Drs. D. Kuzulin, S. Bagnenko, Tu Anikin, and K. Takinimov performed heparin effects in burns studies, using heparin topically and in the body. Those studies found:
Results similar to those of Drs. Saliba, Kruggel, Mangus and Ramakrishnan. Prior to use of heparin all hospitalized patients had a general anesthetic with the daily water-antimicrobial baths with debridement removal of dead tissue. With use of heparin patients had no pain and general anesthetics were discontinued.
Dr. Dmitrienko's studies were presented in the Int’l Symposium on Heparin and Related Biochemicals In Burns Session in the 10th ISBI Congress in Jerusalem Israel, Nov 1997; in the 3rd Int’l Heparin In Burns Symposium in Las Vegas, Nevada, July 2000; in San Salvador at the 1st Pan-American and 4th Heparin Symposium in June, 2002.
