On July 30, 2026, at least nine migrants died as they tried to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. A wave of people overran the border. Spanish troops were called in after local officials were unable to control the crowd. Ceuta’s authorities said that about 40,000 migrants came in on foot, roughly half the city’s 80,000 residents.
The European Union said Frontex would assist and asked Morocco to leaving by ship and road. Spanish forces maintained control over the flow under control and strived to halt additional loss of life.
