www.usccb.orgHere’s a concise update on the latest news about the Liturgy of the Hours.
Overview: A revised edition of the Liturgy of the Hours has received final approval from the Vatican for publication, with a planned release in four volumes. The first volume is expected to cover Lent and Easter and to be usable for Ash Wednesday in 2027. This marks a long, years-long effort to revise translations to better reflect the original Latin texts.[1][2]
Publication details: The publishers selected for the new edition are Ascension and Word on Fire Publishing, indicating a coordinated effort to distribute the breviary widely to lay and clerical communities.[2]
Timeline and scope: The new edition represents a significant revision cycle that began around 2012, aiming to align translations with the Roman Missal updates and to provide an English edition that more accurately reflects Latin originals. The project has involved coordination with the US bishops’ Committee on Divine Worship and Vatican Dicastery for Divine Worship.[6][1]
Context for current usage: In the meantime, many communities continue using the Second Edition and various adaptations within religious orders or parishes, while preparing for the forthcoming edition's rollout.[8][6]

www.catholicnewsagency.comSo when might people be able to actually buy new breviaries? I’m estimating that 2024 is the best-case scenario for a published edition. The current plan has the bishops’ final vote on translations in June of 2023. So I am optimistic that if we get an approval in six months or less from Rome, that perhaps by Advent of 2024, that new breviaries might actually be available. But that, again, is our best-case scenario, and any number of factors could delay the completion.
