Three tomato sauces urgently recalled over fears they may cause 'fatal' botulism

Urgent Recall of Three Tomato Sauces Due to Botulism Risk

Customers are being urged to return certain tomato sauce jars to stores for a full refund amid health concerns. First and Last Bakery, LLC in Connecticut has recalled three tomato-based pasta sauces over potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for life-threatening botulism poisoning.

Affected Products and Distribution

The sauces were distributed from September 22, 2025, primarily in Connecticut and Massachusetts, including at Big Y and possibly other retailers. All affected products bear a use-by date of September 26.

Health Risks and FDA Statement

The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) stated the sauces were "manufactured without an adequately evaluated production process to prevent the formation of the dangerous bacterium," according to the Independent.

Botulism results from toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum, which attack the nervous system causing paralysis. Although no illnesses have been reported so far, the extreme health risk has prompted the recall.

About Botulism

Clostridium botulinum bacteria can develop in improperly processed acidified or low-acid canned foods, leading to toxin formation and severe poisoning.

Consumer Advisory

Due to the serious nature of botulism, customers are strongly advised to return the affected sauces immediately for a refund and avoid consuming them.

Customers have been warned that consuming specific jars of tomato sauce could be fatal.

Author's summary: A recall has been issued for three tomato sauces over botulism risk, urging customers to return affected jars to prevent potentially fatal food poisoning.
