Although MLB Free Agency officially opened Thursday night, the Baltimore Orioles had an active week before the deadline. After announcing Craig Albernaz as their new manager, they reversed a trade with the Chicago Cubs to reacquire Andrew Kittredge for their bullpen.
Building bullpen depth further, the Orioles claimed right-hander George Soriano off waivers from the Miami Marlins. Their roster moves continued Wednesday night with the acquisition of a bench player from the Marlins.
Insider Mike Rodriguez hinted at the Orioles signing veteran outfielder Leody Taveras, a move later confirmed by Jon Heyman. Taveras agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract with Baltimore.
Debuting in the majors in 2020, Taveras spent most of his career with the Texas Rangers before finishing the 2025 season with the Seattle Mariners. His offense struggled this year, hitting .174/.198/.272 over 98 plate appearances with Seattle. Still, his defense has generally been above average, and his speed on the bases should strengthen the Orioles' bench.
"Throughout his career, Taveras' defense has trended toward being above average, and the threat of him stealing should be a welcome addition to the Orioles' bench next season."
Author's summary: The Orioles have quietly enhanced their roster by signing outfielder Leody Taveras and reinforcing their bullpen, aiming for a stronger, more versatile squad next season.
