Kerry Stokes, the last of the media moguls, is not done yet

Kerry Stokes, the Last Media Mogul, Continues to Move Forward

Kerry Stokes dedicated his life to building a television network and newspaper publisher. At his final Seven West Media annual general meeting (AGM), he assured stakeholders that he still has much to offer.

Final AGM and Retirement Announcement

On Thursday, Stokes chaired his last Seven West Media AGM, which lasted 48 minutes. The 85-year-old will step down from the board when Seven merges with Southern Cross Media Group early next year. When asked about his retirement, Stokes gave a rare admission for a media titan: the role might suit a younger leader better.

“Because I would be arrogant if I didn’t. For me to say there wasn’t anyone better than I am is arrogant.”

New Leadership and Future Outlook

Stokes expressed confidence in his successor, Heith Mackay-Cruise, a seasoned media and technology director. The merger will combine the Seven Network, The West Australian, and The Nightly with the Triple M and Hit radio networks.

“I am convinced the new incoming chairman will do a great job and bring new energy and I’m excited about that.”

Role as Adviser

As a 20% owner of the new company, Stokes will serve as a board adviser but promised not to meddle in decisions.

“I don’t intend to be the interfering ex, nothing worse. I’m cheering from the side now.”

Stokes’ transition reflects both respect for fresh leadership and his ongoing commitment to the media industry.

Author's summary: Kerry Stokes, stepping down as chairman at 85, embraces new leadership in his media empire while remaining an advisory presence with respect and enthusiasm for the future.
