The Baltimore Orioles have strengthened their outfield by signing veteran outfielder Leody Taveras to a one-year contract worth $2 million. The news was first reported by MLB insider Mike Rodriguez on Wednesday evening.
Taveras, 27, has spent most of his career with the Texas Rangers organization after signing as an international free agent in 2015. He made his major league debut in 2020 and was part of the Rangers' 2023 World Series-winning team, although he went 0-for-16 during the Fall Classic.
In the 2024 season, Taveras platooned in center field alongside Kevin Pillar, posting a .241/.259/.342 slash line with one home run, eight RBIs, and six stolen bases over 30 games for Texas. On May 4, the Rangers placed him on outright waivers, and two days later, the Seattle Mariners claimed him.
In his first game with Seattle on May 7 against the Athletics, Taveras started in right field for the first time in his career. He contributed by driving in the tying run and scoring the go-ahead run in a 6-5 win.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post also confirmed the signing of Taveras by the Orioles.
In 28 games with the Mariners, Taveras batted .174/.198/.
The Orioles’ addition of Leody Taveras brings experienced depth to their outfield, offering versatility and a proven postseason background.
