Kings Sign Precious Achiuwa, Waive Isaac Jones

The Sacramento Kings have finalized an agreement with free agent forward-center Precious Achiuwa on a one-year, minimum-salary contract. To make space on the roster, the team has waived second-year forward Isaac Jones.

NBA reporter Shams Charania of ESPN noted that the deal was completed earlier today, confirming earlier reports that Sacramento was planning to release Jones to accommodate Achiuwa.

According to team insiders, Jake Fischer first mentioned that the Kings were targeting Achiuwa, while Brett Siegel of Clutch Points suggested at the time that Jones would be the most likely player to be moved.

“The Kings have officially signed Achiuwa and waived Jones,” the team announced in a press release.

Background on Achiuwa

Achiuwa, 26, began his NBA career with the Miami Heat after being selected in the first round. He later joined the Toronto Raptors as part of the Kyle Lowry sign-and-trade in the 2021 offseason and remained with the team for over two seasons. In December 2023, he was traded to the New York Knicks alongside OG Anunoby. This fall, he briefly returned to the Heat on a non-guaranteed deal but was released before the regular season due to luxury tax concerns.

Current Team Situation

The Kings have been short on frontcourt depth following Keegan Murray’s thumb injury last month. With their starting power forward sidelined, they’ve relied on smaller lineups and given additional minutes to rookies Nique Clifford and Dylan Cardwell earlier than anticipated.

Author’s summary: Sacramento added versatile big man Precious Achiuwa to strengthen its injury-hit frontcourt, releasing Isaac Jones to clear his roster spot.
