Gary Lineker backed Arne Slot’s choice to leave out one of Liverpool’s most gifted players from the starting lineup in Saturday’s match. Most of the Reds’ regular starters returned after missing the Carabao Cup defeat to Crystal Palace, and Slot’s selection seemed justified as Liverpool earned a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa — their first Premier League win since September.
Florian Wirtz, however, only entered the game as a substitute for Hugo Ekitike in the 77th minute. Remarkably, this was Slot’s sole substitution, even with a demanding fixture against Real Madrid awaiting in just 72 hours.
“It’d be good for Wirtz to come back into the team when there’s confidence in the squad,” Lineker said. “I think that would be sensible man management at the moment, take him out of the firing line a little bit, and then bring him on. I mean, Wirtz is a really good player, and you don’t buy these players for the first three months. He’s an exceptionally talented young player.”
Through his remarks on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker emphasized the importance of timing and confidence restoration before reinstating young talents like Wirtz into the starting lineup.
Lineker praised Slot’s management, arguing Wirtz’s temporary omission helps the young talent regain confidence before returning to Liverpool’s core lineup.
