Los Angeles Lakers forward Rui Hachimura admitted he did not know about Austin Reaves until Reaves crossed up Giannis Antetokounmpo in 2023. This moment occurred shortly after they became teammates.
The Lakers have managed this season without LeBron James and Luka Doncic thanks to Austin Reaves stepping up significantly. After averaging 20 points last season, Reaves achieved a career-high 51 points, followed by a 16-assist game and a crucial game-winner, elevating his performance to a new level.
Originally undrafted, Reaves signed with the Lakers in 2021 and has developed into an All-Star caliber player. His growth caught even his teammate Hachimura by surprise.
“I am not gonna lie, three years ago when I got traded here, I honestly didn’t know about him before,” Hachimura said on Spectrum SportsNet. “He was injured I think that time. And I think he came back on a game against Milwaukee. I think I remember, he made a move on Giannis around the top and he made a layup. I am like, ‘Oh OK, he got it, you know?’”
When Reaves first played in 2021 under coach Frank Vogel, he was a scrappy guard providing energy rather than scoring, playing alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook. His game has since evolved rapidly.
Austin Reaves transformed from an unknown undrafted player to a key contributor for the Lakers, surprising teammates like Rui Hachimura with his emergence after memorable plays against elite opponents.
