After Yair Netanyahu Fiasco, New Deal Could Mark Comeback for Current WZO Chief

A renewed agreement, still awaiting final approval, may bring a leadership rotation between Rabbi Doron Perez and the current World Zionist Organization (WZO) chairman, Yaakov Hagoel. Importantly, it excludes the Prime Minister’s son, Yair Netanyahu, from any official role.

Collapse of the Previous Agreement

The initial arrangement for appointments in key Zionist bodies disintegrated on Wednesday night after Yair Netanyahu was unexpectedly proposed for a prominent WZO board position. The nomination sparked backlash, notably from the opposition party Yesh Atid, which subsequently withdrew its support.

“The original deal fell apart after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial elder son Yair was unexpectedly tapped for a cushy board position at the WZO.”

This abrupt reversal plunged the World Zionist Congress into uncertainty and halted the prior compromise.

Outlines of the New Understanding

According to reports from Friday, the revised plan envisions a structured rotation for leadership of both the WZO and the Jewish National Fund-KKL. Unlike before, Yair Netanyahu will not assume any WZO post, particularly not the head position in the Diaspora and Information Department.

“The position for which he had been nominated, said to be the leadership of the WZO’s Diaspora and Information Department, comes with an office, a car, and a salary commensurate with that of a government minister.”

It remains unclear who will ultimately fill that role.

Author’s Summary

The revised leadership deal restores Yaakov Hagoel’s standing at the WZO while dropping Yair Netanyahu from any role, aiming to stabilize the organization after internal turmoil.
