Mark Zahra delivered a remarkable performance on Victoria Derby Day, claiming victory in four races, including the feature race aboard Observer, under perfect spring skies at Flemington. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as racegoers celebrated the jockey’s dominance.
Sheza Alibi, the well-supported favorite, triumphed in the second race, The TAB Vanity over 1400 meters. Her odds shortened from $2.80 to $2.20, rewarding confident punters. Once she hit open ground in the straight, she accelerated impressively to secure a clear win for jockey Luke Nolen and trainers Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman.
“It’s been a great 24 hours for Moody. His daughter Breann Harrington starred last night for Carlton, who booked a finals berth by beating West Coast in Perth.”
Runner-up honors went to Teine Aulelei, followed by Icarian Dream. Sheza Alibi looked effortless as she eased to victory in race two at Flemington.
The Birdcage precinct buzzed with energy as guests filled the marquees ahead of the first race. Sponsors once again went all out, with Lexus, Crown, and Kirin each unveiling lavish three-storey marquees. The Lexus structure featured three balconies offering panoramic views of the track, while Crown impressed with a 500-glass champagne tower greeting guests at the entrance.
Mark Zahra shone with four Derby Day victories at Flemington, while the grandeur of the racing carnival reflected both sporting excellence and high-end celebration.
