Joji unveiled the third single from his upcoming album Piss In the Wind, following his earlier release “If It Only Gets Better.” The album is set to drop on February 6.
“Past Won’t Leave My Bed” is a melancholic piano ballad co-written by Joji, Jonathan Xavier Cunningham, P.J.A. Williams, and producer Dan Farber. The track reflects Joji’s emotional struggle with memories of an ex-partner.
In the opening verse, Joji describes seeing his ex everywhere and finding temporary escape only in sleep. The chorus, supported by fuzzy guitar chords, emphasizes his inability to move on. The second verse reveals his failed attempts to self-soothe and constant thoughts about the past.
As Genius user @Hey_Its_Ion notes, “His reference to lullabies recalls his 2020 song ‘Like You Do,’ where he sings, ‘If you ever go, all the songs that we like / Will sound like bittersweet lullabies.’”
The music video portrays Joji trying to outrun his pain by hitchhiking across the country and engaging with risky characters.
