Denver Broncos cornerback and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain II publicly defended his teammate Riley Moss, who has faced scrutiny throughout the season.
Moss drew national attention when he became the NFL’s first white starting cornerback in over two decades during Denver’s 2024 season opener. Despite consistent criticism, he has developed into one of the league’s promising young defenders, often targeted by opposing quarterbacks simply because few dare to throw in Surtain’s direction.
In 2024, statistical analysis even suggested that passing toward Surtain was less effective than throwing the ball away entirely. However, Moss has been penalized repeatedly for defensive pass interference, which Surtain suggested might not be coincidental.
“I ain’t gonna lie, I think they racially profiling my dog,” Surtain said on the Closed on Sundays With Pat and Terrion podcast with Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold. “They calling all these flags on my boy … these flags is egregious. He had a rep against CeeDee Lamb where he played the ball perfectly, and he still got a flag.”
Surtain, currently sidelined for three weeks with a pectoral strain, said the penalties against Moss feel excessive and questioned the fairness behind them.
