It is time to show your colors — the red, white, and blue of our flag, the nation’s symbol of freedom and service. These colors have been official since June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress established the Flag Act.
The flag’s colors are carried into battlefields and flown over government buildings, schools, and cemeteries. Their meanings were assigned by the Continental Congress in 1782. Secretary Charles Thomson explained:
Red represents valor and bravery, white stands for purity and innocence, and blue symbolizes vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
Members of the American Legion regularly demonstrate proper flag handling and fold the flag with respect. A recent workday at Graceland Cemetery involved repairing flags damaged by wind and weather. LuAnn Jackson read the symbolism of each fold as the flag was carefully folded by members Gene Williams and Steve Struchen.
This practice is frequently repeated at schools to educate youth and maintain the respect expected by citizens and military personnel when handling the flag.
The American Legion and numerous volunteers ensure the flags will proudly fly again this weekend in honor of Veterans Day, continuing the tradition of patriotism expressed by the colors of the flag.
