Edgar Wright Reflects on Leaving Marvel's Ant-Man

Edgar Wright, known for films like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho, and The Running Man, shared new insights into his decision to step away from directing Marvel’s Ant-Man.

Wright was initially set to helm the project, but creative differences led him to part ways with Marvel Studios. He explained that he aimed to craft a unique, standalone story, while the studio preferred a film that aligned with the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although Marvel used much of Wright’s original script, they eventually hired another director who would follow the studio’s broader strategy. In a recent interview with The Playlist, Wright discussed the decision ten years later.

“You’re not still losing sleep over that, are you?” Wright joked about his departure from the project. “I didn’t regret my decision to leave at all. I had started working on that film long before even Iron Man came out. By the time it came around, they had established the brand, the continuity, and even a certain way of making a movie. So the chance to do something really different was going away.”

He added that he has since avoided the superhero genre, focusing instead on original and stylistically distinct projects.
