Deadline attended the taping of the special Wicked: One Wonderful Night and shared insights about what wasn’t shown during NBC’s broadcast. The event captured both the magic of the performance and the anticipation surrounding the upcoming film Wicked: For Good.
On Thursday night, NBC brought audiences back to the Emerald City with a vibrant musical showcase featuring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and the full cast of Wicked. Viewers enjoyed reimagined performances from both acts of the musical — from No One Mourns the Wicked to I’m Not That Girl and For Good.
The broadcast included special interviews with cast members and exclusive sneak peeks of two new songs from Wicked: For Good — The Girl in the Bubble and No Place Like Home. These moments teased fans with what’s to come when the highly anticipated film arrives in theaters.
A standout highlight was a duet by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo performing a medley of Get Happy and Happy Days Are Here Again, a classic once sung by Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland. The number was met with enthusiastic applause from the live audience.
Although the televised version captured the show’s essence, some memorable moments were omitted. The taping took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on September 24, except for one unique performance recorded separately.
NBC’s special was filmed with remarkable precision, but several moving audience moments and spontaneous reactions didn’t make the final cut.
The NBC special Wicked: One Wonderful Night offered fans a musical celebration filled with powerful vocals, exclusive previews, and heartfelt behind-the-scenes energy from the Emerald City.
