The official end of Alberta’s fire season arrives on Friday, yet persistent dryness in the province’s southern regions has led to the release of new fire advisories. Both the eastern and western areas of Rocky View County are experiencing moderate fire risks due to dry and windy conditions, according to the county’s official website.
Deputy Fire Chief Bill Messner explained that, although late in the season, it’s not unusual to issue a fire advisory at this time of year. He highlighted how unpredictable the weather can be during this period.
“This is definitely a period of the season where, honestly, the weather can change very rapidly,” said Messner.
Messner noted that the parched landscape has already led to more grass fires over the past week, with up to three reported in a single day. Some of these incidents are suspected to have been caused by human actions, such as discarded cigarettes.
“Please use the proper receptacles. Please don't flick them out the window. That definitely can cause a lot of issues that way,” he said.
Alongside the advisory, Rocky View County has issued a fire ban that temporarily suspends permits for fireworks and outdoor burning. However, the use of barbecues, camp stoves, and indoor fireplaces remains permitted.
According to Messner, it is unclear when the advisory will be lifted. He expects it to continue for at least another week while the dry weather persists.
Despite the official end of Alberta’s fire season, dry and windy conditions in Rocky View County have prompted renewed advisories and a countywide fire ban to prevent further grass fires.
