Edie Falco Aspires to Play a Female Superhero
Edie Falco, renowned for her Emmy-winning performances in The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie, expressed interest in taking on a female superhero role, describing it as an exciting new challenge. She thrives on portraying complex, multi-dimensional characters and has never encountered a role she felt incapable of handling.
“Never have I said I can’t do that,” she said. “You sort of find a way you can go and see, because you’re able to know you have to stop before it is dangerous. And I’ve been in therapy for 7,000 years.”
The Appeal of Complex Characters
Falco explained that complicated roles are what keep acting stimulating for her. She finds simpler characters less engaging and looks for roles with depth and nuance.
“I look for those [complicated characters]. That’s what makes this exciting. To play someone with a less complicated life is less interesting.”

At 62, Falco feels fortunate to have portrayed a diverse range of intricate female characters throughout her career. She credits the evolving landscape of female roles for providing richer, more interesting parts.
“I’ve been very lucky that kind of since I started working, female characters are getting more interesting and complicated, I feel like I’m riding this wave of really interesting and complicated female characters.”
On Avoiding Typecasting and Future Interests
The actress believes not being typecast as a young, attractive woman early in her career likely helped her sustain interesting roles over time.
“I imagine if you’re only ever playing young, beautiful, sexy women, it’s going to get harder as you get older,” she noted.
Looking ahead, Falco is also curious about portraying a political figure, joking about her desire to "get something out of [her] system."
