Tiny Patients, Mighty Care: Inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Each year, the labour and delivery team at Brantford General Hospital brings around 1,500 babies into the world. For roughly 300 of these newborns, their first moments are spent in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where both medical expertise and empathy define the care they receive.

Starting as a small department, the NICU has evolved into a 12-bed specialized facility equipped with advanced technology and staffed by highly trained professionals. The unit now supports infants born as early as 32 weeks and those with complex health conditions, ensuring every child has access to quality care from the very beginning.

“The needs of newborns in our region are growing,” said Amy Griesser, clinical manager of BGH’s NICU, Pediatrics, and Diabetes Education. “Our team continues to evolve — embracing new equipment, techniques, and continuous learning — to make sure every baby receives the best start possible.”

The NICU team includes 25 nurses, nine pediatricians, and numerous dedicated staff who work around the clock. In addition to providing individualized medical care, they offer emotional and practical support to families throughout their journey.

Summary

The Brantford General Hospital NICU combines advanced medical care and heartfelt compassion to give premature and medically fragile infants the strongest possible beginning in life.
