Mystic Aquarium reported that two juvenile gray seals, Victor and Zuma, were released at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, Rhode Island, after two months of rehabilitation. Both were found on Block Island in late August, "minimally responsive on the beach with severe wounds to their hind flippers."
Diagnostic imaging showed multiple fractures and exposed, infected bone in their hind flippers. Mystic's veterinary team performed partial digit amputations to treat the infections while preserving the seals' swimming ability. Victor required surgery on both flippers.
"After weeks of treatment and recovery, Victor and Zuma have made remarkable improvements, received a clean bill of health from Mystic’s veterinary team, and are now ready to return to the ocean."
The Block Island area has experienced a recent rise in seal numbers, accompanied by an increase in entanglements and other injuries. In 2025, Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program has helped 30 seals, surpassing last year’s total by five.
Victor and Zuma’s successful recovery and release highlight Mystic Aquarium’s ongoing commitment to rescuing and rehabilitating injured seals in the Rhode Island region.
