Plans for Big New Box Ship Berth at Port of Mobile Move Ahead

The Alabama Port Authority and APM Terminals Mobile have finalized an agreement to build a new, 1,300-foot container berth at the Port of Mobile. This major $131 million project combines federal funding with private investment from APM Terminals, a division of A.P. Moller-Maersk.

Located at the southern end of the existing container terminal, the future berth adjoins 25 acres of land reserved for potential development in container handling, logistics, or storage. The new facility will expand overall berth capacity by 50%, allowing the port to simultaneously accommodate three ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs).

"The 'Phase V' project marks the next major step in the ongoing expansion of the Port of Mobile container terminal," said officials from the Alabama Port Authority.

This initiative follows the completion of the $366 million Mobile Harbor deepening project, which brought channel depth to 50 feet and made Mobile the deepest container port on the U.S. Gulf Coast. More than $200 million in additional improvements are also underway, including a 33-acre container storage expansion, upgraded rail capacity, and construction of a new rail flyover bridge to provide direct on-dock rail access.

Construction on the new berth is set to begin in 2026, with completion expected within 24 months after groundbreaking.
