The Alabama Port Authority and APM Terminals Mobile have reached an agreement to move forward with constructing a new 1,300-foot (approximately 400-meter) container berth at the Port of Mobile. The $131 million investment combines federal funding with private capital from APM Terminals, marking a major milestone in the terminal’s ongoing expansion.
Once completed, the new berth will boost overall capacity by 50%, allowing the terminal to accommodate three ultra-large container vessels simultaneously. This upgrade will strengthen the Port of Mobile’s position as a leading container hub in the Gulf region.
This Phase V project forms part of a long-term, multi-stage enhancement plan led jointly by the Alabama Port Authority and APM Terminals Mobile. It builds on the recent $366 million effort to deepen the Mobile Harbor to 50 feet — now the deepest container port on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Groundbreaking for the new berth is expected in 2026, with completion projected within 24 months. Upon its opening, APM Terminals Mobile’s annual berth capacity will reach one million container units.
The Phase V expansion represents the next significant step in ensuring the Port of Mobile remains one of America’s most competitive and resilient maritime gateways.
