Supermarket Explosion in Mexico Kills at Least 23
An explosion struck a Waldo's supermarket in Hermosillo, located in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora, following a fire on Saturday. Local media report that at least 23 people lost their lives, with more than ten others injured. Official figures have not yet been confirmed.
The blaze was quickly brought under control, and authorities have begun an investigation to identify the cause of the explosion. According to La Jornada, one possible cause being considered is a gas leak or accumulation of fuel.
The Sonora public security secretariat stated on X that it ruled out “an attack or an event related to a violent act against civilians.”
President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences to the victims, writing on X: “I have been in contact with the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, to provide support as needed. I instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodriguez, to send a support team in order to assist the families and the injured.”

Emergency crews worked to secure the area and support survivors. Federal and state authorities are coordinating efforts to assess the damage and assist affected families.
