European Innovation Council Introduces New Challenge-Driven Funding Model

The European Innovation Council (EIC) will pilot a new “challenge-driven” funding scheme in 2026 to support breakthrough technology development and commercialisation. This initiative is part of the EU's broader research and innovation programme.

Funding Allocation Details

The European Commission announced on 6 November that €6 million will be dedicated to this trial under the €1.4 billion budget for the 2026 EIC work programme.

“A new ‘challenge-driven’ funding approach will be trialled next year by the European Innovation Council—the part of the EU research and innovation programme that supports the development and commercialisation of breakthrough technologies.”
