Today, November 6th, marks what would have been the 95th birthday of Leon Metz, the renowned historian of El Paso. He passed away nearly five years ago during the Covid pandemic, preventing many from honoring his life's work at that time.
Leon Metz devoted his career to highlighting El Paso's significance and history, striving to put the city on the global map. Currently, his family is working to have El Paso's downtown library named in his honor.
ABC-7's Paul Cicala visited Leon Metz's gravesite located at the historic Concordia Cemetery in El Paso. The grave is near that of John Wesley Hardin, a famous gunslinger whom Metz wrote about.
Matthew Metz, Leon's son, visits his father’s grave several times a year. He described Leon as:
“Beloved by many El Pasoans, and his family, he was a great man, he was always out doing speeches, he loved El Paso.”
Brandy Metz, Leon’s granddaughter, has written a letter to the city advocating for the downtown El Paso Library to carry his name as a lasting tribute.
Leon Metz's legacy as a devoted historian of El Paso inspires ongoing efforts to honor him by naming the city's downtown library after this beloved local figure.
