Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that his Liberal government views the dismantling of Canada Post in its current form as a testing ground for broader attacks on the working class. Several reports in the media suggest that the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is nearing a concessionary agreement with Canada Post, one that could lead to deep cuts in jobs and deteriorating work conditions.
Negotiations resumed on Monday, November 3. In an official statement, CUPW thanked the assistance of a government-appointed mediator and expressed its willingness to, as it said:
“overcome the disagreements between the parties” and “secure ratifiable collective agreements at the bargaining table.”
In another communication, the union respectfully urged the pro-business Liberal government, which openly supports reducing two-thirds of Canada Post’s 55,000 employees,
“to ensure that any decisions… are made… with Union input.”

The Liberal government’s strategy at Canada Post may signal a broader plan to weaken workers’ rights, as CUPW nears a controversial deal criticized as a potential sellout.
