Navy wrestling looks to show progress by getting off to a strong start

Navy Wrestling Aims for a Strong Start

The Navy wrestling team gained valuable insight during its opening weekend, facing No. 21 Pittsburgh before competing in the annual Navy Classic. Coach Cary Kolat used the events to assess the team’s growth since last season.

Opening Dual Against Pittsburgh

On Saturday, Navy narrowly fell 20–12 to Pittsburgh, a team that returned most of its starters and entered the season ranked 21st by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Despite the loss, Kolat saw progress compared to last year’s 35–3 defeat to the Panthers.

Navy Classic Performance

The following day, the Midshipmen earned third place among ten teams at the 47th Navy Classic, which featured both Pittsburgh and powerhouse Nebraska, ranked second in the preseason poll. Navy currently sits among the programs receiving votes outside the Top 25.

Coach Kolat’s Focus on Preparedness

“It comes down to who is ready to perform when the season starts. We eased in last year and it was a wake-up call. We started to perform better as the season went on,” Kolat said.

Entering his sixth season, Kolat has emphasized a strong start since preseason practices began months ago. His approach reflects a commitment to consistent readiness and early-season intensity.

Team Composition and Challenges

Though relatively young, the Navy lineup combines experience and new talent, featuring three juniors, two seniors, three freshmen, and two sophomores. A critical gap remains at 141 pounds after the departure of All-American Josh Koderhandt, who ranks 13th in program history with 106 career victories.

Author’s summary: Navy wrestling began its season showing measurable improvement, with Coach Kolat focusing on readiness and youthful depth as they chase higher national recognition.
