The Panthers secured a 74-59 victory over Youngstown State on the opening night of the 2025 season. Although the win wasn’t visually impressive, Pitt managed to close the game with strong performance inside the paint.
Pitt capitalized on its size, scoring 18 points off second-chance opportunities and displaying a gritty style of play essential for success.
“Senior forward Cameron Corhen showed why he will serve as a veteran leader for the Panthers this season.”
Corhen led the team with 23 points and 12 rebounds over 35 minutes, providing consistent leadership when the Panthers' offense looked unsettled early on.
Redshirt sophomore forward Papa Amadou Kante also impressed, grabbing 10 rebounds in his 35 minutes. His defensive agility against quick Youngstown State players proved he can guard any opponent, adding valuable versatility to Pitt’s defense.
First-year guard Omari Witherspoon and first-year forward Roman Siulepa debuted cautiously but still found ways to contribute. Witherspoon made a difficult mid-range jumper, and Siulepa delivered a highlight-worthy block, despite each committing two turnovers.
“It is a challenge to play major minutes off the bat, especially in a conference like the ACC.”
The adjustment period for newcomers in such competitive settings is expected but promising for Pitt’s depth.
The Panthers’ frontcourt dominance laid the foundation for a gritty opening win, with strong leadership and defensive versatility setting a promising tone for the season.
