Canada Post has started workforce reductions as part of a major restructuring effort, while continuing mediation talks with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). Negotiators from both postal bargaining units met with federal mediators and Canada Post representatives on October 30 for the first time since early October. The discussions aimed to restart negotiations and seek common ground.
CUPW confirmed that additional meetings are planned in the coming days. Meanwhile, the union’s rotating strikes are ongoing, and postal workers in the Quebec Region have chosen to withdraw from processing and delivering unaddressed mail, also known as Neighbourhood Mail.
“We all have a part to play in our fight for public services, good jobs and a sustainable public post office. The negotiators thank all members for their continued support,” said Jan Simpson, CUPW National President.
Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement and the minister responsible for Canada Post, indicated that he is prepared to authorize significant job cuts. Analysts estimate that as many as 10,000 positions could be eliminated as the Crown corporation overhauls its operations.
This week, the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates heard Minister Lightbound’s testimony regarding the scope of these potential changes and their economic implications.
Canada Post begins restructuring with thousands of potential layoffs as mediation with CUPW resumes amid ongoing rotating strikes and union-led actions across Canada.
