Graham “Richo” Richardson, former Labor senator, influential powerbroker, and political commentator, has passed away at the age of 76. Tributes have been flowing for the controversial figure shortly after he promised to stay strong until his son finished the Higher School Certificate (HSC).
Richardson served as a cabinet minister in the Hawke and Keating governments and represented New South Wales as a Labor senator throughout his parliamentary career. He played a key role in the 1991 leadership coup that saw Bob Hawke replaced by then-Treasurer Paul Keating.
After leaving politics, Richardson became a well-known political commentator and regularly appeared on Sky News Australia. Despite battling long-term health challenges, he remained determined to see his son complete school.
“When he had his big health challenge, he said to his wife Amanda, ‘I’m going to live till I see Darcy finish exams and his HSC’,” 2GB host Ben Fordham said on Saturday.
“Darcy did his last HSC exam on Thursday, which was his French exam. And Richo died this morning.”
Richardson had struggled with influenza, pneumonia, and had been undergoing dialysis before his death early on Saturday.
Graham Richardson’s legacy as a powerful Labor figure and dedicated father remains firmly etched in Australian political and public life.
