John Swan, known as Swanee, 73, is the older brother of Jimmy Barnes and was the first to lead their musical family. He recently shared insights about his past struggles, including trauma and drug use, as well as his relationship with Jimmy and the impact of living in his shadow.
Swanee has always been close with his siblings and proud of their achievements. “Not many people touch on it, and I think they’re just polite,” he said regarding the public’s focus on Jimmy.
Despite any perceived rivalry, Swanee never felt threatened. “I didn’t really give a stuff, because I got offered the gig before he did,” he explained. He stayed drumming for his band at the time, earning "$25 a week" and “couldn’t afford to lose that money.”
Swanee was surprised when he heard his bandmates Mossy (Ian Moss) and Steve Prestwich joining forces. He joined to sing with Jimmy six months after the band formed but soon felt his time had passed. He remarked, “I was smart enough to realise that this band doesn’t need me.”
After leaving the band, Swanee launched a successful solo career. He also played in other bands, including replacing Angry Anderson in The Party Boys, and achieved a number one hit with them.
