After an offseason full of uncertainty about his next move, Russell Westbrook ultimately joined the Sacramento Kings for his 18th NBA season. The veteran guard revealed that departing from the Denver Nuggets was not his decision but rather the organization’s choice.
Westbrook had a player option to remain with the Nuggets for the 2025–26 season after signing a one-year contract in the summer of 2024. However, when he returned to face Denver on Monday, he disclosed the reason behind his departure.
“The truth is that they didn’t want me back,” he said via The Denver Post. “Somebody else do.”
In that game against his former team, Westbrook recorded an impressive 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists, showcasing that he could still perform at a high level.
During his stint with the Nuggets, Westbrook experienced a strong resurgence as a backup, averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. Despite his solid output, the organization chose to take another direction.
“I thought it was great,” he said of his season in Denver. “I guess other people didn’t.”
When asked how he viewed his year in Denver after its abrupt ending, Westbrook shared a measured response.
“Every part of this journey for me is always a positive impact.”
Russell Westbrook stated that his exit from the Denver Nuggets was not by choice but due to the team’s decision to move on, despite his successful season and personal growth.
