Over 5 Million Under 65s with Long-Term Health Conditions May Miss Flu Vaccine

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warns that many people eligible for the flu vaccine might be unaware of their entitlement. Latest data reveals that fewer than one third (28.9%) of individuals with one or more long-term health conditions (LTHCs) have received a flu vaccination.

Among 9 million people under 65 in clinical risk groups, only 40% were vaccinated during the 2024–25 season, leaving over 5 million unprotected.

Flu Vaccine Uptake in Older Adults

Vaccination rates are higher among adults aged 65 and over, with 61.5% vaccinated so far this year and 74.9% during the previous year. However, many older adults with LTHCs still miss out on protection.

Increased Risk for Some Clinical Groups

For some clinical groups, the risk of influenza-related mortality is much higher compared with the general population.

The UKHSA emphasizes the importance of improving awareness and vaccine uptake among eligible populations to reduce flu-related health risks.

Author's summary: Over five million people under 65 with long-term health conditions remain unvaccinated against flu, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and vaccine coverage.
