Paul Kelly, the renowned Australian singer-songwriter, has reached the milestone age of seventy and marked it with a new album titled Seventy. The record features around twelve fresh tracks reflecting on this significant stage of life. The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda interviewed Paul about the meaning of turning seventy and his perspectives moving forward.
Marty: “The album is Seventy, you are 70, and believe it or not, I’m 70 too. I’m curious about your thoughts because it seems like a major thing, doesn’t it?”
Paul shared that, historically, he hadn’t paid much attention to his age, but the way people treat him now makes the milestone feel more significant.
Paul Kelly: “I remember three big birthdays clearly. Forty felt like a major birthday, like I was truly an adult now. But forty was also the first time I noticed people I grew up with—friends, colleagues—starting to pass away. That’s something that happens in the music world, as quite a few of us die young.”
Reaching seventy brings a new awareness of life’s fragility and the transitions experienced over the years.
Paul Kelly’s reflections illustrate the passage of time and its impact on personal and professional life, emphasizing how significant birthdays bring a mixture of retrospection and acceptance.
