Pete Davidson has a steadfast friend and mentor in Eddie Murphy. In a heartfelt interview with PEOPLE, the 31-year-old comedian and actor expressed deep appreciation for Murphy, 64, describing him as someone he can rely on and relate to on many levels.
Davidson revealed that his admiration for Murphy began in childhood. "I've been a fan of Eddie Murphy since I was five, six, when my mom bought me Delirious from FYE," he recalled, explaining how an unintended gift sparked his love for stand-up comedy.
Both Davidson and Murphy share the unique bond of starting their careers on Saturday Night Live (SNL), a show known for launching comedic talents. Davidson joined SNL at just 20 years old, remaining for eight seasons from 2014 to 2022. Murphy began at 19, appearing for five seasons from 1980 to 1984.
Davidson highlighted the parallels in their personal lives that deepen their connection. "We were both some of the youngest cast members on SNL," he said. He also pointed out a poignant similarity:
“We both lost our dads when we were young… and that was one of the reasons we got into comedy.”
He expressed gratitude for receiving guidance from someone who truly understands his journey and challenges.
Eddie Murphy’s mentorship stands out for Pete Davidson due to their shared youth, similar personal losses, and parallel comedy careers, creating a unique bond and source of support.
