Paolo Vanoli admitted he had only half a training session to prepare his Fiorentina side before their 2-2 Serie A draw with Genoa. The result came in his debut match as head coach following Stefano Pioli’s departure earlier in the week.
Genoa were also under new management, with Daniele De Rossi replacing Patrick Vieira just days earlier. Both teams, struggling in the lower half of the table, battled to a draw on Sunday afternoon.
“Coming in with half a training session wasn’t easy, so congratulations to the guys,” Vanoli told DAZN after the game. “You have to start from the basics in these situations: spirit and togetherness. This has to be fundamental for us. We need to rediscover the positivity that allows you to avoid mistakes.”
Vanoli emphasized that tactical changes would come only after his players mastered the core fundamentals of play. Fiorentina’s defensive weaknesses remain a concern, with the team having already conceded eight goals from set pieces this season.
Paolo Vanoli began his Fiorentina tenure with a draw and stressed rebuilding team spirit and fundamentals before any tactical reshaping.
