A powerful tornado struck Rio Bonito do Iguacu, a town of 14,000 people in Parana state, causing massive destruction, killing at least six people, and injuring around 750 others, local authorities reported on Saturday.
The tornado, which occurred on Friday evening, lasted only minutes but unleashed winds reaching up to 250 km/h (155 mph). It flipped cars and demolished numerous buildings, leaving the town heavily damaged.
“I arrived home and found myself without a roof over my head,” said 51-year-old Nereu Sabadini, who was outside the town during the event. “I’m homeless and rebuilding will take some time.”
Officials estimated that 90 percent of the town suffered damage, including homes, schools, and businesses.
“It destroyed the town, houses, schools. What will become of us?” asked Roselei Dalcandon as she stood amid the rubble of her former shop.
On Saturday, traumatized residents started to search through debris, hoping to recover belongings and begin the long process of recovery.
The aerial images revealed vast destruction, illustrating the tornado's ferocity and the scale of the disaster.
