It Took T.J. Watt Nine Years To Meet A Pittsburgh Steelers Legend

The Pittsburgh Steelers' dominant defensive win over the Indianapolis Colts honored the legacy of legendary coach Dick LeBeau. The game also brought about a long-awaited meeting between LeBeau and linebacker T.J. Watt.

LeBeau returned to Pittsburgh to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Steelers’ 2005 Super Bowl XL championship. For Watt, it was a special moment nearly a decade in the making.

“It took nine years, but I’m glad,” Watt said during his weekly interview with WMBS’ George Von Benko. “He’s obviously a busy guy, but meeting the legend himself was surreal.”

LeBeau was among several former Steelers honored during halftime of the Week 10 game. Notable attendees included Ben Roethlisberger, Jerome Bettis, and Aaron Smith, all key members of that championship roster.

Although both men helped define different eras of Steelers defense, they never overlapped professionally. LeBeau’s final season coaching in Pittsburgh was in 2014, while Watt entered the NFL three years later, in 2017. That same year, LeBeau finished his coaching career as defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans. Despite the two teams facing off that season, Watt and LeBeau hadn’t yet met.

“Anytime those guys come back, it’s awesome,” Watt said. “Being recognized for their Super Bowl is incredible. Seeing them all together again shows how close that group still is.”
