Hyundai has overtaken Volkswagen to become #2 globally in profit, says CEO

Hyundai overtakes VW in profitability, claims CEO

Hyundai Motor Company has reported strong profitability, surpassing the Volkswagen Group to become the second-most profitable automaker in the world, according to CEO Jose Muñoz. Toyota remains the leader in both sales and profits, while the contest for second place has heated up.

Speaking to the media at the Genesis Magma launch in France, Muñoz stated, “We have become, already, several years in a row, the number three global OEM by sales. And in fact, when you consider profits, we are number two. So we just overtook Volkswagen very recently.”

Muñoz attributed the profitability surge to Hyundai’s “Power of the Group”—the vertical integration that enables the company to steer its own destiny more effectively than many peers. “One of the key success factors of the group is what we call inside the ‘Power of the Group’. The group is comprised of more than 50 different entities that work all aligned,” he said.

He cited the group’s ownership of Boston Dynamics and Supernal as examples of its tech leadership, though the core automotive business remains the primary profit driver.

“We just overtook Volkswagen very recently.”
