Saskatoon skip Mike McEwen and his rink have advanced to the men’s playoffs at the 2025 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials after a string of strong performances during the round robin in Halifax.
McEwen’s team, representing the Nutana Curling Club, secured their spot after a decisive win over Team Bottcher. Their consistent play and sharp shot-making placed them among the top teams heading into the playoff rounds.
Teammates Reid Carruthers, Derek Samagalski, and Colin Hodgson contributed to the success with disciplined sweeping and communication on the ice. The rink has shown notable composure in tight ends, particularly during matches against experienced teams.
The men’s playoff field features some of the country’s best curls, including teams skipped by Brad Gushue and Kevin Koe. McEwen’s crew will need to maintain precision and momentum if they hope to earn a berth in Sunday’s final and potentially represent Canada at the upcoming Winter Olympics.
“We’re just trying to stay focused and keep building each game,” McEwen said after Friday’s match. “The level of play here is incredible, but our group feels confident and connected.”
