The Duffer brothers reveal the mechanics behind Will Byer's new abilities introduced in Stranger Things. Rather than traditional telekinesis or mind control, Will's powers manifest as a unique form of psychic sensitivity connected to the Upside Down.
“It’s not straightforward telekinesis,” the Duffers explain. “Will experiences a heightened connection to the Upside Down, allowing him to sense and sometimes influence events, but with limitations.”
This connection also means Will is somewhat of a conduit for Vecna’s influence, though his awareness and control fluctuate throughout the series.
Vecna, the antagonist, is deeply aware of Will’s enhanced connection. The Duffers note:
“Vecna senses Will’s sensitivity and uses it to further his own agenda, but it’s unclear just how much control he has over Will at any given moment.”
Vecna’s knowledge creates tension, as his awareness of Will’s abilities makes Will a target but also a potential key to stopping the Upside Down’s spread.
The Duffer brothers clarify that Will’s powers are less about direct action and more about psychic resonance with the Upside Down, making his abilities complex and emotionally driven, which adds depth to his character arc.
