Coal Operator Pleads Guilty in Federal Tax Evasion Case
An Eastern Kentucky coal operator, John Thomas Quintrell, has pleaded guilty to withholding over $22 million in federal income taxes and Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes.
According to federal court documents, Quintrell entered a guilty plea on six federal counts of willful failure to collect or pay over tax. Despite being informed of his tax obligations by the IRS, Quintrell failed to pay the due taxes, instead using the funds for personal use.
- Quintrell was the manager and sole member of Civil LLC, a limited liability company engaged in coal mining in Harlan County and other places.
- He failed to truthfully account for and pay over federal income taxes and social security taxes that he was required to withhold from the wages of employees.
Quintrell pleaded guilty to six federal counts of willful failure to collect or pay over tax.
