Georgia’s Medicaid Work Requirement Program Spent Twice as Much on Administrative Costs as on Health Care, GAO Says

Georgia's Medicaid Work Requirement Program

A new report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reveals that Georgia's Medicaid Work Requirement Program, known as Pathways to Coverage, has spent at least $54 million on administrative costs alone.

According to the report, most of the tax dollars used to launch and implement the program have gone toward paying administrative costs rather than covering health care for Georgians.

The program has spent twice as much on administrative costs as on health care.

The program is cited by Republican lawmakers as a national model for federal Medicaid work requirements.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services extended the Georgia Pathways program through 2026.

Author's summary: Georgia's Medicaid program spent more on administration than healthcare.
