There has been discussion about whether NASCAR should abandon its playoffs and return to a 36-race points system. NASCAR introduced a postseason points format in 2004 with the "Chase for the Nextel Cup".
Previously, the series awarded points based on finishing position, with the driver having the most points at the end of the season declared the champion.
Matt Kenseth dominated the points standings in 2003 despite only winning one race, and had already locked up the championship before the final race, making the season finale essentially meaningless.
