Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has given Speaker Mike Johnson an ultimatum: schedule Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva's swearing-in ceremony within two days or face a lawsuit.
Rep.-elect Grijalva, who was elected to represent Arizona's 7th Congressional District, has yet to be sworn in three weeks after the election. In a letter to Johnson's office, Mayes threatened litigation if the oath of office ceremony is not scheduled by Thursday, before the end of the federal government shutdown.
Mayes announced that she was sending the letter during the official canvas of the Sept. 23 special election results.
The state's attorney general is taking this step to ensure Grijalva's timely swearing-in, as the federal government shutdown approaches its end.
