Exposure of Civil Servants' Passwords
A recent report by NordPass reveals that thousands of civil servants' passwords have been exposed since early 2024.
The study, conducted in collaboration with NordStellar, found that a total of 53,070 passwords belonging to U.S. civil servants were exposed in public sources.
- Department of Defense: 1,897 total exposed passwords, 222 unique
- State Department: 15,272 total exposed passwords, 190 unique
- U.S. Army: 1,706 exposed passwords, 167 unique
- Department of Veterans Affairs: 1,331 total password exposures, 53 unique
The report also found that a handful of exposed passwords were linked to the White House, challenging the idea that federal institutions are more secure than local governments against cybersecurity threats.
